Farren

Picking up Justin is easy. After all, it’s not like the kid’s a professional. Rick nabs him outside the convenience store and drags him back to the motor inn without incident.

“Step into the room slowly,” I hear Rick order Justin as the door to our room swings open. No weapon is visible in Rick’s hand, not that it would matter out here in no-man’s-land, but I’m certain there’s a gun pointed discreetly at Justin’s back in the hand I can’t see.

“Why are you doing this?” Justin asks.

His voice sounds level and firm, but when he comes into the room I see the abject fear in his eyes, even behind those glasses.

“Just keep moving,” Rick mutters.

Justin continues into the room at a snail’s pace, and Rick, seemingly at his wit’s end with this rookie criminal, gives him a hard shove. Justin trips forward, right into my path.

“Whoa there, big fellow”—he is kind of tall—“hold up.” I help steady him, and the minute he looks into my eyes, it’s clear he knows exactly who I am.

“Farren,” he says, stepping way the fuck back.

Essa must have told him about me. But why would she do that?

I eye him curiously. “So, what’s a nice college student like you doing out here in the middle of nowhere?”

“Nothing,” he declares with a shake of his head. “Nothing at all.”

He moves farther away from me, and that’s probably wise. A part of me wants to kick his ass for what he’s gotten Essa into, and that may still occur, but for now I have to hold off. There’s more happening here than what meets the eye, I’m sure of it.

The kid backs right into Rick, who shoves him toward me.

“Have a seat,” I say, gesturing to the edge of the bed. “There’s no use pretending. We know who you are and why you’re up here in these mountains.”

He sits on the bed, stares down at the floor. “What do you want from me?” he whispers.

I pull up a chair, spin it around, and take a seat across from him. “We have some things we need to ask you.” Justin eyes the door, and I warn, “Don’t even think about running.”

“I-I’m not.”

I can’t help but chuckle. “Yeah, sure you’re not.”

Rick sits down on the edge of the other bed, mere feet away. He clears his throat, a reminder to Justin that there are two of us, and only one of him.

He gives up fighting and closes his eyes. “Okay, I’m ready to talk,” he says.

“Wise choice,” I tell him. And then we get down to business. “What’s happening with Essa?” I ask. “We know she’s up at the old resort. Is she being treated properly? Is she all right?”

After one long exhale, Justin opens his eyes and says, “Yes, she’s okay, all things considered.”

I have to be sure of one thing. “No one has touched her. Please tell me no one has laid a hand on her.”

“Uh…” I stand menacingly, and he shakes his head with vigor. “No, no, not in the way you’re thinking.
